RSI crossing 30 and 70: what it is, and how to test it

The RSI is a 0 to 100 gauge of how one-sided recent closes have been. Readings under 30 are called oversold and over 70 overbought. QuantLogic counts the bar where the RSI crosses into those zones, and the bars it spends beyond 80 or under 20. Here are the exact rules.

What it is

RSI(14) compares the average gains and losses of the last 14 closes. Falling closes push it down, rising closes push it up.

Oversold and overbought are names, not predictions: the RSI can stay low while price keeps falling.

The exact rule QuantLogic uses

RSI(14) crossed below 30, on one-minute or five-minute bars. Crossed above 70 is the mirror image.

  1. The RSI(14) of the bar's timeframe is under 30 at this bar.
  2. It was not under 30 at the bar before.
  3. Above 80 and below 20 are different ideas: every bar while the RSI stays beyond that level.

When is it known? Known when the bar closes. The five-minute RSI uses the last five-minute bar already closed.

Versions you can build

  • RSI(14) 1-min crossed below 30. The first one-minute bar under 30.
  • RSI(14) 1-min crossed above 70. The first one-minute bar over 70.
  • RSI(14) 5-min crossed below 30 / above 70. The same on five-minute bars.
  • RSI(14) above 80 / below 20. Every bar while it stays beyond, on 1 or 5 minutes.

What to look at around it

In QuantLogic, every time the idea happened is laid out with the data points around it, so you can see where it held and where it didn't:

Traps when you test it

  • Treating oversold as a buy. In a strong fall the RSI can stay under 30 for a long time.
  • Mixing timeframes. A one-minute cross and a five-minute cross are different events.
  • Testing only one side. Check the crosses above 70 too.
