NQ, MNQ, ES and MES tick value and futures calculator

MNQ tick value is $0.50 and NQ tick value is $5 (a point is $2 and $20). MES and ES ticks are $1.25 and $12.50 ($5 and $50 a point). Below: a free calculator for points, ticks and dollars on any NQ, MNQ, ES or MES trade, with commissions, the risk to your stop and the R multiple.

MNQ tick value and point value

MNQ tick value: $0.50. MNQ point value: $2. A 10-point move: $20 per contract.

MNQ, the Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100, is one tenth of NQ. It moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $0.50, four ticks to a point, so one point is $2 per contract. A 25-point move on 3 MNQ is 25 x $2 x 3 = $150. Many newer and prop-firm traders start here because a normal 30 to 50-point NQ swing costs $60 to $100 per micro instead of $600 to $1,000.

NQ tick value and point value

NQ tick value: $5. NQ point value: $20. A 10-point move: $200 per contract.

NQ, the E-mini Nasdaq-100, moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $5, so one point is $20 per contract. A 15-point stop on 1 NQ risks $300 before costs; the same stop on 10 MNQ risks the same $300.

MES tick value and point value

MES tick value: $1.25. MES point value: $5. A 10-point move: $50 per contract.

MES, the Micro E-mini S&P 500, is one tenth of ES: 0.25-point ticks worth $1.25, so one point is $5 per contract. A 6-point MES win on 2 contracts is 6 x $5 x 2 = $60.

ES tick value and point value

ES tick value: $12.50. ES point value: $50. A 10-point move: $500 per contract.

ES, the E-mini S&P 500, moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50, so one point is $50 per contract. ES moves fewer points than NQ in a day, so a 4-point ES stop ($200) is closer in risk to a 10-point NQ stop ($200) than the prices suggest.

How much is 1 NQ futures contract?

A futures contract is exposure, not a purchase price. One NQ controls $20 times the Nasdaq-100 futures price: at 20,000 that is $400,000 of exposure, and one MNQ is $40,000. ES controls $50 times the S&P 500 futures price (about $300,000 at 6,000) and MES $5 times it.

To open the position you post margin, an amount your broker or prop firm sets and changes with volatility, so check theirs. What matters for each trade is the point value: every point NQ moves is $20 per contract, whatever the price.

How the calculator works

Points are the exit minus the entry for a long, the entry minus the exit for a short. Dollars are points times the contract's point value times the number of contracts. Commission is per contract for the round turn (in and out), the way most futures brokers and prop firms quote it.

With a stop, the risk is the loss if the stop is hit, commissions included, and the R multiple is the net result divided by that risk. A trade that makes twice what it risked is a 2R trade.

Questions

What is the MNQ tick value?
$0.50. MNQ (Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100) moves in 0.25-point ticks, four to a point, so one point is $2 per contract.
How much is 1 NQ futures contract worth?
One NQ contract controls 20 times the Nasdaq-100 futures price, so at 20,000 it is worth $400,000 of exposure. You do not pay that: you post margin, which your broker or prop firm sets and which is a small fraction of it. Each point the price moves is $20 of profit or loss per contract.
What is the tick value of NQ and MNQ?
NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100) moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $5 each, so one point is $20 per contract. MNQ (Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100) has the same 0.25-point tick worth $0.50, so one point is $2.
What is the tick value of ES and MES?
ES (E-mini S&P 500) moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50 each, so one point is $50 per contract. MES (Micro E-mini S&P 500) has the same tick worth $1.25, so one point is $5.
How do I calculate futures profit?
Points gained (exit minus entry for a long, entry minus exit for a short) times the dollar value of a point times the number of contracts, minus commissions and fees. A 10-point NQ win on 2 contracts is 10 x $20 x 2 = $400 before costs.
Is one MNQ the same as one tenth of an NQ?
Yes. Ten MNQ contracts move like one NQ: $20 a point in total. The same goes for ten MES against one ES.
