Engulfing candle: what it is, and how to test it
A bullish engulfing candle is a green candle whose body swallows the whole body of the red candle before it. Bearish engulfing is the mirror image. Traders read it as one side taking over from the other. Here is the exact rule QuantLogic uses, and how to check it on your market.
What it is
The pattern is two candles of opposite colours. The second one's body, from open to close, covers the first one's body completely.
Only the bodies count. The wicks can poke out on either side without changing anything.
The exact rule QuantLogic uses
Bullish engulfing (the long side), on one-minute bars. Bearish is the mirror image.
- The bar before is red: it closed below its open.
- This bar is green: it closes above its open.
- This bar opens at or below the bar before's close, and closes at or above the bar before's open.
When is it known? Known when the second bar closes. Nothing about it depends on a later bar.
Versions you can build
- Bullish engulfing. A green body covering the red body before it.
- Bearish engulfing. A red body covering the green body before it.
What to look at around it
In QuantLogic, every time the idea happened is laid out with the data points around it, so you can see where it held and where it didn't:
Traps when you test it
- Counting only the ones after a long fall. The app counts every engulfing candle; where it came from is a filter you can add and test.
- Forgetting how common it is on one-minute bars. Small engulfing pairs happen all session; the context around them is usually what separates them.
- Testing only bullish engulfing in a rising market. Check bearish engulfing too.
Build it and test it yourself
Open Bullish engulfing in Build with QuantLogic. See every time it happened on NQ, ES, Gold or Crude since September 2025, check the long and the short side, add your own filters and run the luck test.

Questions
- Do the wicks have to be engulfed too?
- No. In QuantLogic only the bodies count: the second body has to cover the first body.
- Does there need to be a gap?
- No. Futures trade almost around the clock, so the open of one minute is usually the close of the one before. Opening at the same price counts.
- Is a bullish engulfing candle a buy signal?
- No. It describes what two candles did. QuantLogic gives no signals; you test it and decide.
