Doji: what it is, and how to test it

A doji is a candle that closes almost exactly where it opened, so its body is a thin line inside a normal range. Traders read it as a moment of balance between buyers and sellers. Here is the exact rule QuantLogic uses, and how to test it on your market.

What it is

Open and close are nearly the same price, while the high and low are not. The candle looks like a cross or a plus sign.

Named variations (dragonfly, gravestone, long-legged) differ in where the body sits within the wicks. The rule here counts them all.

The exact rule QuantLogic uses

Doji, on one-minute bars.

  1. The bar has a range: its high is above its low.
  2. Its body, from open to close, is less than 10% of that range.

When is it known? Known when the bar closes. A doji has no long or short side by itself, so test both.

Versions you can build

  • Doji. A body under a tenth of the bar's range.

What to look at around it

In QuantLogic, every time the idea happened is laid out with the data points around it, so you can see where it held and where it didn't:

Traps when you test it

  • Treating every doji the same. On one-minute bars they are common; where they print usually matters more than the candle.
  • Choosing a side after seeing the chart. A doji has no direction of its own: check longs and shorts.
  • Mixing timeframes. A doji on a five-minute chart is not the same event as one on a one-minute chart.

Build it and test it yourself

Open Doji in Build with QuantLogic. See every time it happened on NQ, ES, Gold or Crude since September 2025, check the long and the short side, add your own filters and run the luck test.

Questions

How small does the body have to be?
Under 10% of the bar's high-to-low range. A bar with no range at all never counts.
Are dragonfly and gravestone dojis included?
Yes. Any bar whose body is under a tenth of its range counts, wherever the body sits.
Is a doji bullish or bearish?
Neither by itself. That is why you test both sides and look at what is around it.
