Change of character (CHoCH): what it is, and how to test it
A change of character is the first close through the last swing against the trend: above the last swing high in a downtrend, or below the last swing low in an uptrend. Traders read it as the structure starting to turn. You can test whether it means anything on your market.
What it is
In a down structure, price makes lower highs and lower lows. The first close above the last swing high breaks that pattern. That close is called a change of character, often written CHoCH, or a market structure shift.
Many traders then wait for price to come back toward the start of the move, the retest, rather than act on the break itself.
The exact rule QuantLogic uses
Bullish change of character (the long side). Bearish is the mirror image.
- The structure is down: the last confirmed swing high is below the one before it, and the last confirmed swing low is below the one before it.
- This bar closes above the last confirmed swing high, and the bar before closed at or below it.
When is it known? Swings are confirmed 3 bars after they print, so the structure at a bar is read only from swings already known. The idea fires on the close of the breaking bar.
Versions you can build
- Bullish change of character. In a down structure, a close above the last swing high.
- Bearish change of character. In an up structure, a close below the last swing low.
- Retest after a bullish change of character. Within 30 bars, price comes back to the middle of the move (or the top of a gap inside it, whichever is higher) and closes above the move's low.
- Retest after a bearish change of character. The mirror image.
What to look at around it
In QuantLogic, every time the idea happened is laid out with the data points around it, so you can see where it held and where it didn't:
Traps when you test it
- Seeing a change of character in every pullback. The rule needs a real down structure first: two lower highs and two lower lows, all confirmed.
- Moving the retest level after the fact. The app fixes it when the change of character fires.
- Ignoring the failures. If price closes back under the move's low, there is no retest; those count too.

Questions
- Is CHoCH the same as a market structure shift?
- Traders use the two names for the same idea: the first break against the existing structure.
- Why test the retest separately?
- The break and the retest happen at different prices and times, so they can behave differently. Test both and compare.
- Does a change of character mean the trend has turned?
- No. It only means one swing was broken. Many changes of character fail; testing shows how often on your market.
