NQ indicators that hold up on your own trades

There is no best NQ indicator for everyone. VWAP, moving averages, RSI, Bollinger Bands, gamma levels and the time of day each describe one thing about the market. What matters is which of them separate your winning NQ trades from your losing ones, and that you can test.

The indicators NQ traders use, and what each tells you

  • VWAP. The volume-weighted average price since the session open: whether you entered above or below it, and how far.
  • Moving averages (EMA, SMA). Trend direction on your timeframe, and whether price was stretched away from the average.
  • RSI. How stretched the recent move was, useful mostly to avoid chasing.
  • Bollinger Bands. Whether price was inside, at or breaking out of its normal range, and how strongly.
  • Gamma levels. Which side of the gamma flip the market was on, and the room to the nearest call or put wall. See gamma exposure explained.
  • Time of day. The open, the morning, midday and the close behave differently on NQ; many traders win in one window and give it back in another.
  • Economic events. Whether a scheduled high or medium impact release was minutes away or had just come out.
  • NQ vs ES. Whether ES confirmed NQ's latest high or low, and which index was stronger since the open.

How to test an indicator on your trades

  1. Take at least 100 of your own NQ or MNQ trades, real or from a backtest.
  2. For each trade, record the indicator's value at the moment of entry, using only bars that had already closed.
  3. Split the trades by that value (above or below VWAP, inside or outside the bands) and compare profit factor and net result on each side.
  4. Keep only conditions that make a difference over a good share of your trades, and be wary of combining many: with enough conditions, anything looks good on the past.

How QuantLogic does it

Every trade is placed on 1-minute market context with these values as they were at entry. The findings rank which conditions your winners share, with the best combination of up to four and the combination to avoid.

Make an indicator turns a finding into a widget with one green or red light per condition, updated on every closed 1-minute bar during the session: in real time on Analyze Live, 15 minutes behind on Analyze. RSI, moving averages and Bollinger Bands can also be drawn on each trade's chart. QuantLogic is analysis only: it never places orders. Start with a TradingView backtest.

Test your NQ indicators on your own trades

Upload a TradingView backtest or connect Tradovate read-only. QuantLogic records every one of these at the moment you entered, ranks what works and what doesn't in your trades, and builds an indicator from the conditions that hold up. Explore the free demo first.

No card needed for the demo. Read-only: QuantLogic never places orders.

Questions

What is the best indicator for NQ?
The one that separates your winners from your losers. VWAP and the time of day are the most common starting points for NQ day traders, but the answer depends on how you trade, and it can be measured on your own history.
Does VWAP work on NQ?
Many NQ day traders use it as the day's fair price: longs above it, shorts below it, or fades back to it. Whether it helps you shows up when you split your trades by their side of VWAP and their distance from it at entry.
How do I test an indicator without fooling myself?
Use only what was known at the moment of entry. A value calculated on the bar that closes after your entry, or a daily high that had not happened yet, makes any indicator look better than it is.
